Venice Carnival, Italy – 11-21 February
31 January 2012

The Venice Carnival is now world famous – it always takes place during the ten days leading up to Shrove Tuesday. Carnival, being a pre-Lent festival, means ‘farewell to meat’ and is celebrated throughout Italy.
It was first held in Venice in the 11th century and consisted of over two months of revelry, until it fell into decline during the 18th century. It was revived in 1979 with great success and nowadays it is a great excuse to don a mask and costume, parade around the city, enjoy the live music in the main squares of the city, the events organised by the tourist board and is a wonderful open-air festival where everyone can join in. Fantastic costumes are displayed in St Mark’s Square and Venice is the perfect back-drop for amazing photographs.
Carnival in the 18th century began with a series of balls in St Mark’s Square, as can be seen on the fresco on the walls of the famous café Quadri’s. Fortunes were squandered every night of Carnival in the Ridotto Gambling casino, whatever the social status all the people wore costumes and masks, many connected to the Commedie del’Arte, Harlequin, Columbine, the Plague Doctor and of course the courtesans.
Even if you don’t wish to put on a costume, face-painting is offered in the various streets, various hats are on sale, and of course you have to taste the ‘frittelle’ – type of doughnut, which are only made over the Carnival period!!!!

Vienna Opera Ball, Austria – 16 February
31 January 2012

The Vienna Opera Ball evokes breathtaking images – the rustling of ball gowns, fiery musicians and the glitter of the grandest of ballrooms. The entire dance floor is awhirl at the rhythm of a Viennese Waltz, hundreds of couples, all in a synchronized movement and the sparkle of a tiara make for an unforgettable close to the Viennese carnival season.
Each year, the world famous Vienna Opera Ball, the most opulent of all balls, is held at the Vienna State Opera on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. The auditorium of the Vienna State Opera is transformed for an evening of dance and becomes the most beautiful ballroom in the world. Not only is the Vienna Opera Ball (Wiener Opernball in German) considered an Austrian celebration, but it was originally intended to be an impetus for the economy and tourist industry. Glamour from the days of old, renowned artists and international celebrities make it a spectacle to behold.
It was only in December of 1877, when Emperor Franz Joseph authorized a ball to be held in the Imperial and Royal Court Opera on the “Ring.” This was a direct result of the resounding success of Johann Strauss’s performances for the Opera Ball in Paris. The opening night of the first Vienna Opera Ball started with The Wedding March from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” followed by a mixed choir with soloists and rhapsodies and folk dances. Johann Strauss personally conducted the closing number.
The proceeds of the first Vienna Opera Ball were so good, more opera balls were held in the following months. Its splendor provided Vienna with a new attraction and is still one of the most sought after tickets in the world. Despite a tumultuous history, the Vienna Opera Ball remains virtually unchanged as the society event of the year.

Christie’s Elizabeth Taylor Collection
01 December 2011

A lifetime of glamour and great moments reflected in an iconic collection of diamonds, pearls, gemstones, historic jewels and storied gifts
Christie’s Elizabeth Taylor Collection is a four-day series of landmark sales devoted to the iconic collection of Elizabeth Taylor, the celebrated film star, fashion icon, and humanitarian. On 13 December 2011, Christie’s New York will present 80 of Ms. Taylor’s most iconic jewels in a special Evening Sale, followed by 189 additional jewels in two Day Sale sessions on 14 December.
Widely celebrated as one of the greatest private collections ever assembled, this dazzling array of jewels includes Elizabeth Taylor’s most iconic diamonds, gemstones, historic jewels, and one-of-a-kind creations, as well as a treasure trove of personal mementos and beloved gifts. The total selection of 269 magnificent jewels from this storied collection is estimated to achieve well in excess of $30 million.
“From her most jaw-dropping diamonds, gems, and one-of-a-kind historic jewels, to cherished ‘It’s Tuesday, I love you gifts’, and never-before-seen keepsakes, Elizabeth Taylor’s magnificent collection of jewels promises to captivate the auction world this fall. This is without a doubt the greatest private collection of jewellery ever assembled in one place, and Christie’s is honoured to have been entrusted with the global tour of the collection this fall, and the sale of the collection in its entirety this December,” said Marc Porter, Chairman and President of Christie’s Americas.
“Elizabeth Taylor’s passion for jewellery was well-known, but it is her depth of knowledge about fine jewellery that truly impresses,” added François Curiel, International Jewellery Director and President of Christie’s Asia. “From the first time I met her in 1998, it was clear that she possessed an expert’s eye for craftsmanship, rarity, quality and history. She collected the best pieces from the best periods, and as a result her collection boasts exquisite examples from the most celebrated of jewellery designers, including BVLGARI, Boucheron, Cartier, JAR, Schlumberger, Tiffany, and Van Cleef & Arpels, among others.
Elizabeth Taylor always planned to offer her collection of jewellery at auction and I hope that the next owner of each of these iconic pieces will enjoy and respect these jewels just as much as she did, and as she herself said, ‘give them a really good home’”.
In December, the tour will culminate in a special exhibition of the complete collection at Christie’s New York.
Art Basel Miami Beach
01 December 2011
Art Basel Miami Beach is the most important contemporary art show in the United States, a cultural and social highlight for the Americas held in Miami, Florida each December, which is a sister event to Art Basel in Switzerland. The Miami exhibition has been held annually since 2002, as a city-wide event.
Despite the continuing crisis in the global economy, Art Basel Miami has regained its status as the busiest event in the city for high-end catered events. The main show is far larger than it was in the beginning, despite a battering by the global financial crisis, and is no longer the new kid on the collector circuit, but a mandatory stop for any self-respecting art player. In some very social circles, it even overshadows the original in Switzerland, as far as the partying, the opulent dinners and the unbridled hobnobbing are concerned.
The figures are impressive: last year’s attendance of 46,000 looks set to be topped this year, with some of the world’s most respected art dealers exhibiting more than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists.
Art Public, a new initiative, will transform Collins Park with 24 works, both sculptural and in performance, and there are talks, sideshows, films, conversations and events galore. Among the many sections is Art Kabinett, where galleries present curated exhibitions in a separately delineated space within their booth – these could be thematic group displays or solo slots for rising stars. Also new is Art Video, a 7,000 sq ft outdoor projection wall on the Frank Gehry-designed New World Centre. And that’s not even to mention the parties, meetings, behind-the-scenes trades and dealings, and all the rest.
It was a good idea to bring an art fair to Miami, to say the least. It stands at a unique intersection of the art world, a hinge between the traditional East Coast scene and the emerging energy of Latin America, where both new artists and new buyers have become a significant force in the past few years. In addition, Miami’s own collectors, galleries and art-lovers form an ever-growing power bloc.
Larger exhibits are held in the Miami neighbourhood of South Beach with free, public exhibits held along the beach and in various parks throughout South Beach. More private events are held at the Miami Beach Convention Centre with expositions of artists from around the world. The Lincoln Theatre, Colony Theatre, and local bookstores also are hosts to many Art Basel movie showings and expositions. Most art galleries and studios in the area host public events in correlation with exhibition that showcase the work of local Miami artists. Many local galleries and artists also have special events and exhibitions before and after the official festival dates, to take advantage of the increased media coverage and the influx of art patrons to the community. These factors have increased the popularity of the Miami exhibition to the international art community. The Miami exhibition attracts more than 40,000 attendees a year, a third of whom are visitors to Miami.
There’s the official calendar, and then there’s the party calendar. The fair opens to the public on the 1st December, but professional partiers know to get there two days earlier, for some of the week’s best soirees.
The Soho Beach House, the latest outpost of the exclusive London members-only club, is the site of several parties, including one for the White Cube gallery in London. There are also dinners at the Standard Hotel (for Paul Kasmin Gallery) and elsewhere in Miami Beach. It’s as if the art world discovered the “beach” in Miami Beach. Several shindigs this year are taking place along the sand, but luckily after dark, so there’s no need to pack the sunscreen.
Jeffrey Deitch and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles is holding a “beach” party on 30 November at the Raleigh Hotel’s famous Art Deco pool. The Belgian electro duo 2 Many DJS promises to keep things going late.
On the same night, at the Soho Beach House, Louis Vuitton is sponsoring a “beachside” barbecue for Art.sy, a site that lets art lovers find new artists, much like what Pandora does for music. Carter Cleveland, the site’s founder, will be joined by Dasha Zhukova and Wendi Murdoch. Both parties are invitation-only.
Restaurants matter, too, but only insofar as reservations that are hard to get. One of the most coveted tables is at The Dutch, an outpost of the SoHo restaurant run by the chef Andrew Carmellini. The 170-seat restaurant, at the W South Beach is already booked for Aby Rosen’s annual A-list dinner on 1st December.
Cecconi’s, which opened last year at Soho Beach House, is still in demand, with private dinners for Swarovski, Phillips de Pury and David Zwirner. If you can get a seat, it’s also a good perch for spying the spill-over from the hotel’s penthouse and Tiki Bar.
The Dubai Airshow
01 November 2011

Running from 13-17 November 2011 at the city’s Airport Expo, this year’s edition of the Dubai Airshow will be the biggest yet.

Alison Weller, Managing Director of F&E Aerospace explained: “The Dubai Airshow has become a global forum for the Middle East aerospace market and once every two years it highlights the achievements, progress and buying power of the region.”
Unveiled is a number of aircraft which will be present at the show: The Bell/Boeing V-22 Tilt Rotor, a unique aircraft that can perform both vertical take-off and landing and short take-off and landing; and the MA600, manufactured by China’s Xi’an Aircraft Industry Co. Ltd. The 60-seater will be seen for the first time outside of China.
For the first time ever, and reflecting the 40th anniversary of the UAE, the flying display will open with the country’s own aerobatic team – Al Fursan – which will fly Alenia Aermacchi aircraft. The display will also feature the Patrouille de France aerobatic team, flying the Alpha jets.
This year’s event will, once again, be the platform for state-of-the-art technical demonstrations, plus aircraft on the static park display.
The static park will display an F18, F15, C17, C-130J and an Apache MH-60 from the US government and an array of business jets from companies such as Gulfstream, Bombardier and Cessna.
Helicopters are also making a big appearance at this year’s show, with companies such as Russian Helicopters, Sikorsky, Bell and MD Helicopters, plus Quest, who will be launching the first-ever helicopter programme to be built in the UAE.
The Dubai Airshow is organised under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and in co-operation with Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Dubai Airports and the UAE Armed Forces.
Lord Mayor’s Show
01 November 2011

On 12 November 2011, the 684th Lord Mayor of London will follow in the footsteps of his predecessors and embark on a procession from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice via St Paul’s Cathedral as part of the Lord Mayor’s Show.
In a tradition dating back to 1215 and enshrined in the charter of King John, each new Lord Mayor is required to swear a pledge of allegiance to the Sovereign in front of the Lord Chief Justice and Judges of the Queen’s Bench Division. An established highlight in London’s social calendar, the Lord Mayor’s Show attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, with millions watching at home.
Behind the new Lord Mayor over 6,000 people from all across London and the UK will come together in a procession extending more than three miles to celebrate their city’s proud cultural heritage and to revel in its diverse modernity. With more than 100 participating organisations ranging from the Barts & The London Charity to the Mexico Chamber of Commerce, this year’s Show demonstrates exactly why London is widely regarded the most cosmopolitan city in the world and why the Square Mile continues to enjoy its reputation as a world-leading financial centre.
