At just 29 years old, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have been named the Top US Philanthropists of 2013.
The Chronicle’s ranking of the 50 donors who give the most to charitable causes shows that the wealthy contributed $7.7-billion last year, with higher education and family foundations receiving the most money.
Mr Zuckerberg and his wife made an $970m donation, in the form of 18 million shares of Facebook to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, a charity that manages and distributes charitable funds.
Zuckerberg ranked second in the donor ranks in 2012 behind Warren Buffett. The 2013 gift – to a charity which works to support the neighbourhood where Facebook has its headquarters – marks the first time a philanthropist under the age of 30 has given the largest single donation.
