In the last two weekends of February, the Umbrian mountain town of Norcia will host the 51st edition of Nero Norcia, its international black truffle fair.
The open air event takes place within the medieval Piazza San Benedetto offering a full gastronomic immersion of the regions culinary specialities including salumi, prosciutto and capocollo from local wild boar and fresh and seasoned cheeses such as the pecorino sheep’s cheese.
Of course, such regional delicacies play second fiddle to the ‘black diamonds’ sourced from the surrounding Sibillini National Park. These gastronomic jewels will be prepared by local masterchefs in a range of delectable dishes which can be paired with locally produced fine wines like the famous Assisi Grechetto or seasoned with the golden and fruity olive oil produced in the same region.
A number of cultural events will also take place including entertainment, photography exhibitions, guided wine tastings, black truffle hunting with a specially trained truffle hounds and demonstrations of historic professions such as the art of producing cured meats.
Stay at Norcia’s leading luxury hotel the Palazzo Seneca, located just seconds away Piazza San Benedetto, where you can sample the regional delicacies in the gourmet Vespasia restaurant, arrange truffle hunting trips and visit local producers.
