The Black Sea coastal city of Sochi in Russia will host the 22nd Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2014 with a total of 98 events spread over 15 winter sports from 6 to 23 February.
The games will be divided between the brand new purpose-built Sochi Olympic Park with snow events taking place in the Krasnaya Polyana mountain range. Sochi’s humid subtropical climate and winter sun will make it one of the warmest and mildest cities to have hosted the games.
Home fans will be pinning their hopes on superstar ice hockey player Alexander Ovechkin who currently captains the American NHL side Washington Capitals. Ovechkin is the crowning jewel in a hotly tipped Russian national ice hockey team which for the past four years has been ranked number one by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
Raising its international profile even further, Sochi is the proposed site for Russia’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix in more than 100 years and will also be one of the host cities during the FIFA 2018 World Cup.
