The British Academy Film Awards, Britain’s answer to the Oscars, returns to the London’s Royal Opera House on 16 February 2014 for what promises to be a star studded event.

English comedian, thespian, and all-round British luvvie, Stephen Fry returns for a ninth stint as host on an evening that will be wall to wall with Hollywood’s a-list superstars.

Leading the charge with 11 nominations is Alfonso Cuaron’s heavily praised Gravity, closely followed by British director Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave and the David O’ Russell feature American Hustle both wrestling for awards with 10 nominations each.

All three pictures join Captain Phillips and Philomena in the Best Film category meaning notable absences for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, the Ron Howard Formula 1 biopic Rush and the Coen brothers feature Inside Llewyn Davies.

American Hustle gets to showcase its immensely talented cast with Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence all nominated. Other nominees include the French Palme d’Or winner Blue Is The Warmest Color, Sally Hawkins and Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine in the Leading Actress and Supporting Actress categories respectively and Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street and Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips both in the Lead Actor category.
