New York’s prestigious venue The Metropolitan Opera plays host to a limited run the much loved comic opera L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love) in the New Year.

L'elisir d'amore

The two-act play by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti tells the tale of a tangled web of love and intrigue. Desperate for the affections of the beautiful landowner Adina who has spurned his advances, Nemorino buys a fake love potion from charlatan magician Dr Dulcamara. When Nemorino is tricked into joining the army by a rival for Adina’s affections, Sergeant Belcore, Adina begins to believe that she may have feelings for Nemorino after all.

Russian opera star Anna Netrebko, known affectionately by her fans as “La Bellissima”, reprises her role as Adina with Mexican tenor Ramón Vargas filling the role of Nemorino, the man vying to win her heart.

The opera will be produced by American theatre director Bartlett Sher, winner of both the 2008 Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for his direction of the Broadway play South Pacific and described by The New York Times as “one of the most original and exciting directors, not only in the American theater but also in the international world of opera”.
