With Britain finally having experienced that season called summer for the first time in years, now is the perfect time to catch the Edinburgh International Festival.

Edinburgh

Starting on 9 August, the Scottish capital will host three weeks of performing arts including: opera, music, theatre and dance.

The theme of the 2013 edition focuses on the historical influence of technology over art, from the anatomical sketches of Leonardo da Vinci to the innovative ground-breaking work of contemporary video artists such as Samuel Beckett. The festival’s artistic director since 2006, Jonathan Mills, said “artists have been shaped by the technological times in which they have lived and have, at their greatest, transformed our perceptions of that very technology. That is a powerful way to think about their music.”

Highlights of the event include a production of Beethoven’s ‘Fidelio’ set on a spaceship, a collaboration between contemporary classical composer Philip Glass and the queen of punk’s golden age era Patti Smith, a performance by the Russian National Orchestra and much more.
