You know that old chestnut about painting the town red? Well, now you can, literally.

La Tomatina Festival

If you fancy something a bit different from the usual pristine beaches, luxury yachts and swanky restaurants, head to the small village of Bunol in Valencia on 29 August for the world’s biggest tomato fight. With up to 50,000 revellers chanting “Tomatina! Tomatina!” stretched over several miles and with 125 tonnes of the juicy fruit at your disposal, this tomato bombing frenzy is nothing but pure, unadulterated fun.

Amusingly, the tradition started way back in 1945 when a brawl broke out in the Plaza del Pueblo during a street celebration. With a vegetable stall nearby, two feuding groups of youths began pelting each other with tomatoes. They had so much fun that they decided to return a year later and do it all over again, this time attracting new tomato lobbing enthusiasts.

The event attracts people from all different backgrounds who run, jump and slide through mulched tomatoes all day in all sorts of messiness. Just spare a thought for the poor soul who is tasked with cleaning it all up afterwards.
