Tarentaise Ice Trail, Val d’Isère, 14 July 2013

Running enthusiasts should head to the charming Alpine resort of Val d’Isère this July for Europe’s most scenic and challenging marathon: The Tarentaise Ice Trail.

Tarentaise Ice Trail Val d'Isere 2013

This gruelling run will take you out of the usual marathon landscapes of the city and put you among some of nature’s most scenic panoramas and we think you’ll need that inspiration too, considering that last year’s runners took an average 13 hours and 37 minutes to complete its 65 km length!

That’s certainly an intimidating challenge but the more rational will be glad to hear that there are some rather more manageable variations: ‘Altispeed’ is a 32km course and ‘Montagnarde’ a 13km hike along with a mini-course for the little ones but you’ll have to tackle the big one to enjoy the 5000m gradient and stunning views that come with it.

The race takes you over all manner of terrain along the pathways of the Espace Killy but at least the altitude should keep you cool. You might even be running alongside some of Europe’s finest athletes with skyrunning champions Kilian Jornet of Spain and Emelie Forsberg of Sweden taking part in this year’s edition, assuming you can keep up with them.

The course will take you around Val d’Isère up to the Grande Motte glacier, the Aiguille Pers and Pissaillas glacier before a finish at the valley to enjoy extremely well-earned refreshments. The price of entry also includes a pre-race breakfast, lunch, congratulatory gift at the end of the day, participation into a lottery draw and access to the aquasports centre.
