Palio di Siena, 2 Jul & 16 Aug 2013

One of the world’s most enthralling horse races returns to the Italian village of Siena on 2 July and 16 August this year.

Palio di Siena

For the uninitiated ‘Il Palio’, as it is known locally, is a breakneck, bareback horse race around the medieval Piazza del Campo that harks back to the traditional spirit of pure equestrianism.

Not for the faint-hearted, this adrenaline pumping scamper is often a dangerous affair with jockeys brave enough to participate often thrown from the thoroughbreds as they navigate the blind spots and tight corners of the makeshift racecourse in a frenzied bolt towards the finish line.

The race is the celebration of an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1656 and has been run each year ever since, making it one of the oldest in the world. The event brings the entire community together and serves as a perfect excuse, if you needed one, to escape to the beautiful and idyllic Tuscan setting this summer.
