Montreux Jazz Festival, 5-20 July 2013

Although still called the Montreux ‘Jazz’ Festival, there will be a huge influx of rock influenced artists in the 2013 edition.

Montreux Jazz Festival

American rockers ZZ Top will be one of the headlining acts at the world famous event and are sure to bring their iconic face fuzz along for the party. German pioneers of electronica, Kraftwerk, ensure the boundaries of diversity are pushed further with their special 3D show. Former frontman of The Police and humanitarian activist Sting is further indication of the festival’s move away from its more traditional jazz roots.

Also in attendance will be rock gods Leonard Cohen and Brian May, American punk-pop group Green Day and blues warbler Joe Cocker. Perhaps the most surprising is Prince who’s been touring recently following a lengthy hiatus.

The event has historically had a soft spot for rock. It was during the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971 when the former event venue The Montreux Casino, perched on the shores of Lake Geneva, was ravaged by a fire which sparked one of the greatest rock anthems of all time ‘Smoke on the Water’ by Deep Purple, who return to perform some forty two years later.
