The Festival International du Cirque de Monte-Carlo was inaugurated by S.A.S. Prince Rainier III of Monaco due to his lifelong passion for circus arts. The 37th edition will be held between 17 and 27 January 2013 in the Chapiteau de Fontvieille in Monte Carlo.
Today the event is presided over by H.S.H. Princess Stephanie and has become the largest and most prestigious circus event in the world. The Princess has hands-on approach to cherry picking the acts as well as being involved in the choreography, costuming, music and lighting. She ensures that the spirit of the traditional circus is maintained with classic acts heavily revolving around clownery, shows with animals and gravity-defying acrobatics. This is infused with some of the industry’s most innovative new creations pushing the envelope on circus acts forward into a new generation.
The event is famed for its awards ceremony with many competing for the coveted top accolade, the Clown d’Or (Golden Clown) which is the circus world’s Oscar equivalent. This awards ceremony attracts the best talent from across the globe giving audiences the opportunity to witness the crème de la crème at the top of their game.
