NYE in Times Square, New York, 31 December 2012

Of all the New Year celebrations that take place across the world, none are quite as stellar or internationally recognised as Times Square in New York.

Times Square NYE

The distinctive shower of confetti and tinsel fired from the rooftops of the surrounding buildings upon the one million revellers below, the pulsating live music, the balloons, pom-poms and a spectacular pyrotechnic backdrop all culminate in the ultimate party atmosphere – what better way to greet the New Year than with a joyous celebration of hope, happiness and unity.

At the stroke of midnight, the iconic lighted New Year’s Eve Ball, which has been a traditional feature of celebrations in the big apple since 1907, will descend 70 feet in sixty seconds from One Times Square emblazoned with “2013” across the surface. The geodesic sphere measures twelve feet in diameter, is lit by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs and covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles capable of creating a kaleidoscope of more than 16 million vibrant colours that light up New York and give billions of viewers worldwide the most engorging visual feast.
