The Top 5 Cosmetic Procedures for Men

© Subbotina Anna -

We thought it was only right to publish part two of our cosmetics procedures series, those most sought after by men, on International Men’s Day. Read on to find out which surgeries tempt men to go on the table and under the knife…

1. Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Bags under the eyes will inevitably form with age but in some people, much like hair loss or grey hair, they can arrive at an unexpectedly young age and can often be the cause of a hereditary trait. Dark circles under the eyes are one of the most visually common cosmetic problems that men can encounter and are often tied in with premature aging or fatigue giving a particularly unwelcome appearance. Blepharoplasty involves reshaping the eyelids by removing excess eyelid skin to cure drooping skin, puffy bags and dark circles under the eyes. As with many cosmetic surgery solutions, there are a number of non-surgical alternatives such as various creams, however they are not considered to be as effective.

Specialist profile: The Chow Centre
Founded by leading surgeon Dr. Chow, this centre has one of the best patient satisfaction records in the business. As the son of an architect and an engineer, Dr. Chow discovered a passion for both art and science early in life, and realised that facial plastic surgery combined the best aspects of each. Dr. Chow performs his lower eyelid surgery via the transconjunctival approach, which involves an incision made just inside the lower eyelid with no external incisions. In specific circumstances, Dr. Chow will instead choose the subciliary approach, in which an incision just below the line of the eyelashes is made.

2. Cosmetic Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty, or as it is more commonly known ‘ear pinning’, is an external ear surgery procedure designed to move the ears closer to the head. Otoplasty is less common than other forms of cosmetic surgery but for those cursed with protruding ears, it is seen as an essential fix to one of the most embarrassing cosmetic peccadillos a person can have. Unless of course you happen to be Prince Charles in which case they are a uniquely identifying endearment. The good news is that otoplasty is one of the most straightforward and quick cosmetic procedures around.

Specialist profile: The Aesthetic Institute
Dr. Robert M. Wald, Jr. is the man behind The Aesthetic Institute and has been in private practice since 1986 having performed over 2,000 surgeries. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. He is a past President of The Orange County Society of Plastic Surgeons and has been named one of the Top Doctors in Orange Coast Magazine for the last 7 years. Dr. Wald’s otoplasty concerns itself with natural looking results with a three step programme: a less prominent earlobe, a flatter concha and a shallower sulcus. The primary incision is placed behind the ear where it is very unnoticeable making the cup portion of the ear shallower which causes it to lie closer to the head.

3. Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia)

Whilst breast enhancement is the most common cosmetic surgical procedure among the ladies, the men prefer their chest assets to be going in the other direction. Excessive breast tissue in men can be the result of age, a sudden loss of weight or puberty. Whatever the reasons, male breast reduction by removing breast tissue, fat and sagging skin can give you a flatter, firmer and more masculine chest. The operation is quick, usually lasting around 90 minutes but you will need at least two days of aftercare in the hospital and longer to recover at home.

Specialist profile: Sunset Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Daniel Yamini has an intimidating honour roll where, among many others, he appears as a member of the Newsweek Top Physicians, Top 10 Beverly Hills and RealSelf’s Platinum Elite. Dr. Yamini’s career has witnessed him performing more than 5,000 procedures and he is a breast precision specialist. The Gynecomastia treatment combines breast reduction surgery with Vaser ultrasound liposuction of the chest to give definition and tone.

4. Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)

The face lift is one of the more traditional forms of cosmetic surgery and is increasingly favoured by celebrities such as movie stars whose line of business is often heavily dependent on their youthful appearance. Regardless of the care levels afforded for your skin, age is going to catch up with it one way or another. A face lift reverses those signs of aging by tightening loose skin and jowls that have lost their natural elasticity. It is considerably more effective than Botox and other age reducing injections. Your surgeon will consult you on the three common types of face lift which include: traditional, minimal access cranial suspension which has more concealed and shorter scarring and keyhole surgery most commonly used for brow lifts and upper face lifts.

Specialist profile: The Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery
The Beverly Hills Institute features two of America’s most notable surgeons, so called “plastic surgeon to the stars”, Toby G. Mayer, M.D., who is rumoured to be the go-to man for Hollywood a-list celebrities, and dual Board certified Richard W. Fleming, M.D. They have also appeared extensively in the media including in the magazines Grazia, Men’s Health, People and on television including E! News, ITV, NBC, BBC and Hollywood’s Hottest Looks 2011 to name but a few. In truth, for those looking for various procedures, the Beverly Hills Institute is an ideal all-rounder but for the purposes of this article we have highlighted them for their 2010 Face Lift and Scar Reduction awards from RealSelf, one of the world’s biggest cosmetic surgery resources.

5. Hair Transplant

Of all the insecurities and fears over a man’s physical appearance imperfections, hair loss sits at the top of the pile. For many men, a shaved head is a stylistic choice promoting masculinity but there are still a great number of men who are very protective over their locks. Thankfully advancements in hair transplants, or hair implants if we want to be technical, have developed an alternative to the only historically viable option of being forced to hide under a toupee. Up to 3,000 micro and mini grafts can be implanted in one session meaning that the procedure usually takes a full day and is a bit unkind on the wallet. It isn’t uncommon for follicles to fall out within the first month or surgery before re-growing either but with a bit of investment and a bit of patience, a full head of natural hair is waiting to cover up those receding hairlines and balding patches.
