White Turf, St. Moritz, 5, 12 & 19 February 2012

White Turf is an enthralling series of horse races taking place over three Sundays in February on the frozen lake of St. Moritz.

This prestigious event attracts affluent individuals and prominent personalities from all over the world who come to enjoy a flutter and a Champagne tipple in what has become one of the most significant entries in the social calendar for the international upper class.

The charming Swiss resort town of St. Moritz, nestled in the picturesque Engadin valley, welcomes its international visitors by laying on a programme of superb entertainment including live music, art exhibitions, culture shows and gourmet catering.

Perhaps the most adored event is the unique, fun and entirely crazy sport known as skijoring. Deriving from the Norwegian word skikjøring meaning ‘ski driving’, the idea involves riderless horses stomping around the lake towing skiers behind them.

It holds a special place in the heart of the locals as it originated in this region and is still very much a characteristic trait of the area. Skiers roar with laughter as they get dragged along at speeds of up to 50km/h and desperately try to maintain some level of control directing their horse towards the finish line.
